Dress For Class - Fall 2011

A. Combo Ballet/Tap Classes for ages 3-5:
Pink leotard, pink tights, pink leather split-soled ballet shoes. Optional: Mid-thigh- length skirt, but nothing longer because the teacher needs to see your dancer’s legs. Hair pulled back and away from your face.

Tap shoes: Black. We sell the kind that buckles then stretches so your dancer can slip them on by herself. If you purchase a pair of tap shoes with ribbon ties, please take out the ties and replace them with elastic, so your dancer can slip them on and off by herself/himself and we won’t waste class time tying shoe laces. We are better teachers when all dancers are dressed alike, as it makes it easier to assess dancer’s movements, posture, lines of the body, etc.

B. Combo Ballet/Jazz Classes for ages 6-8:
On top: Either black leotard or tight black top (we sell black studio tank tops).

On bottom: Either black dance shorts/pants. If wearing a leotard, tights that are pink or black. Optional: mid-thigh length skirt over the leotard, but nothing longer because the teacher needs to see your dancer’s legs.

Shoes: Pink leather split-soled ballet shoes. Hair pulled back and away from your face. We are better teachers when all dancers are dressed alike, as it makes it easier to assess dancer’s movements, posture, lines of the body, etc.

C. Classical Ballet Classes, All Levels.
Black leotard and pink tights with pink leather split-soled ballet shoes. Hair pulled back and away from your face. Mid-thigh-length skirts may also be worn and black dance shorts may be worn over the leotard. Levels 4 & 5, please consult with Katie Ponozzo before purchasing pointe shoes. We are better teachers when all dancers are dressed alike, as it makes it easier to assess dancer’s movements, posture, lines of the body, etc.

D. Jazz Classes:
It’s much easier for your teacher to assess your movement, posture, angles, etc. when you are all dressed alike = she can polish your dance more easily and as a result, you will look better performing as a class!

Hair pulled back and away from your face.

Top: Tight black top like a studio tank top or black leotard.

Bottom: Black dance pants or black dance shorts.

Legs: Bare or body tights or tights.

Shoes: When your dance costume is selected, we will know whether you need tan jazz shoes or black jazz shoes. Until then, please wear whatever you have on hand ~ we’d hate for you to purchase a tan pair of shoes, and then later find out that you need a black pair to match your costume. If you don’t own any dance shoes at all, then your safest bet is to purchase a black pair and keep your fingers crossed that black is the color you’ll need for matching your costume! If you already own a pair of ballet shoes, just wear them for the meantime. We also have a box of used shoes that you're welcome to look through. If a pair of Jazz shoes fits your dancer, feel free to keep them. Just return them to the box when your dancer outgrows them.

E. Non-performing Jazz Technique Classes:
We’d prefer you wear solid black but we’re not as picky about colors & patterns since we’re not polishing group choreography.

Top: Tight (tank top or leotard)

Bottom: Dance shorts, dance pants, leotard.

Shoes: Any jazz shoes or foot undeez.

F. Hip-Hop:
Just wear a pair of sneaker/tennis shoes and loose, comfortable clothing.

G. Lyrical:
Dancers may wear to class any color and style of dance wear and dance shoes, foot undeez, 1/2 socks, etc., that they prefer.

H. Tap-only:
It’s easy! Just a pair of shorts or pants (make sure the pants don’t go over your shoes because the teacher will need to see your feet as you dance), and a comfortable top you can move in!

Tap Shoes: We sell quality tap shoes at our studio at a good price. Shop early for best Selection.

I. Competition Dance Teams
It is much easier for your dance coach to “polish” your dance routines when you are dressed alike, in the same colors. As a result, your routines will be cleaner as you adhere to the dress code:

Hair: Pulled back, out of your face.

Top: Studio tank top or the black leotard you wear to ballet class.

Bottom: Black jazz pants, or black dance shorts.

Legs: Bare or tights.

Feet: As soon as your dance coach determines what shoes you’ll need to wear with your costume, begin wearing those shoes to class so that you can get used to dancing in them. Until then, wear whatever jazz shoes you already own or your pink ballet shoes.

Dress For Class - Mommy And Me Dance Class

Little Ballerinas may wear any color of dance wear to class. Shoes ~ pink, leather, split-soled ballet shoes (we sell these in our studio store at reasonable prices).

Frequently Asked Questions

“What’s a “Split Sole” dance shoes?

On the bottom of the ballet shoe, rather than having one piece of hard material from the toes to the heels, there are two pieces; one under the toes/ball of the foot, and another under the heel. This leaves a space in the middle of the sole, at the arch, where there’s only the soft shoe leather, so it’s easier for your dancer to point and manipulate her/his feet.

Can I buy a really inexpensive pair of ballet shoes at Wal Mart?

Yes, but your dancer will have to work harder to point her/his feet and for just a few dollars more you can have a far superior shoe. We’ll fit the shoe to give your dancer growing room so she/he will not need another pair of dance shoes during this entire dance year (Sept-May). Plus there are NO shoe laces to bother with!

Can I purchase shoes and other dancewear at Dance Unlimited?

First week of dance is crazy-busy with parents purchasing dancewear and shoes for their dancers. We recommend purchasing early to avoid the chaos and to make sure we don’t run out of the sizes you need.

We sell dance shoes and dancewear in our studio store. They are quality items sold at a reasonable price. Although you can purchase dancewear at other stores, we whole-heartedly recommend our Ballet & Jazz shoes. They are:

  1. All leather.

  2. Split soled (easier for dancers to point their feet). Please avoid purchasing the ballet shoes that have the one piece of cardboard on the bottom. They’re very difficult to maneuver and the ties/laces are a pain.

  3. Have elastic around the arch so that they stretch as the foot grows = dancers don’t grow out of them as soon.

  4. They have no ties or shoe laces to worry about.

  5. Costs: Child Sizes: $16 plus tax. Adult Sizes: $17.50 plus tax.
Our Tap Shoes: $19 for children size. $26-$49 Adults.
    Our Jazz Shoes: $32-$38
    Leotards in various styles: $14-$23
Tights: $6.90 - $8.94 for footed tights. We also sell convertible tights.
    Dance shorts: $9.45-$10.45
    Dance skirts: $9.45-$12
